North Beach

Once the epicenter of The Beat Generation's migration West - North Beach evokes vespa riding, cigarette pant wearing and espresso sipping bohemians. Today North beach embraces it's Italian heritage and Bohemian roots among the throngs of tourists and elderly Chinese who practice Tai Chi in Washington Square Park. The area's Italian heritage is kept alive by the few neighborhood merchants such as Molinari's Deli, Cafe Trieste, Stella Italian Bakery, Cafe Roma Italian restaurant and Galetti Brothers Shoe Repair, and the Italian American Sports Club. The North Beach section of Grant Avenue is not much wider than an alley - you'll want to spend an afternoon of shoe shopping and espresso sipping before you hop back on your Vespa.
