Palm Springs is the go to destination for Angelinos looking for a bit of respite away from the hustle and bustle of LA’s tangle of freeways. The desert oasis has seen a bit of a revival in the past decade along with the interest in mid-century architecture and vintage furniture shops. Along with the influx of glamorous globetrotters many new luxe hotels have opened, all touting decadent mid-century influences and world-class spas.

When you think fashion and vintage style in Palm Springs one name that comes to mind, Trina Turk. Trina’s comes after her stint as a designer for California sportswear label Ocean Pacific where she honed her skills at designing textile designs. The Trina Turk label was launched in 1995 along with partner and then stylist turned photographer Jonathan Skow. Today Trina Turk has shops across California as well as New York. The collection has also expanded to include home furnishings. Trina’s inspiration comes from many diverse cultures, natural landscapes as well as the mid-century architecture of Los Angeles. Trina’s Palm Spring store opened in 2002 and has expanded to include a home furnishings store next door. You’ll marvel at the Kelly Wearstler (KWID) interior as well as the iconic building it is housed in, designed by modernist architect Albert Frey.

Trina was kind enough to take a few minutes from her busy schedule to share her favorite Palm Springs hot spots with StyleMaven’s editors.

Where do Palm Springs wine and dine?
For lunch Trina recommends Norma’s at the Parker Palm Springs (interiors designed by Jonathan Adler) and El Mirasol Mexican restaurant
For dinner Tina’s visits Le Valluris or grills something yummy at home
For the perfect Palm Springs cocktail, Tina loves the groovy lobby of the Parker Palm Springs, Melvyn’s or cocktails at home by the pool

What are the must-see vintage shops in Palm Springs?
Bon Vivant, 457 N. Palm Canyon Palm Springs, California 92262 (457 N. Palm Canyon stores are located within a mid-century vintage furnishings mall – The Palm Canyon Galleria)

Outside of Palm Springs, what are your favorite spa getways?
Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, CA or Ten Thousand Waves outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Palm Springs is known for its modernist architecture, what is your favorite and most inspirational?

If purple is the new black, trust Flair Aoyama to stock green. Like its sophisticated namesake neighborhood, Flair Aoyama has the confident style that creates rather than follows trends. Tweens desperate for the current of-the-moment fad need not enter Flair. The pieces here aren’t overtly sexy and brazen, they’re more slouchy, slip-off-the-shoulder sensual. The deliberately crinkled jackets, long swirling skirts and pale pink culottes look perfect for romantic evenings in the park or a weekend in Malibu. The look here is feminine, but not cotton-candy girly, relaxed but not sloppy, i.e. just right for grown-up women

Tucked into the maze of streets behind Harajuku’s main boulevards, Dual’s porthole windows and psychedelic mural signal a funky retail presence. Bear and moose-shaped cutouts cavort under racks of sheer drapey blouses with winged sleeves. Bunnies, cows and birds frolic around boots and bags. New merchandise mingles with vintage wear to create a hippy rock-star vibe. You could easily picture Kate Hudson or Cameron Diaz here browsing through the racks of sexy sequined tanks and embellished denim. Dual imports most of its colorful, fun pieces from Brazil, enlivening Tokyo streets with a little South American panache.

Diamond-paned mirrored walls and delicate Swarovski chandeliers with translucent tendrils speak of elegance and restraint. Dress Camp clothes are anything but. Riotous colors and blazing swirls splash across jackets, dresses, pants and bikini tops. Jungle-print blazers, floral-print men’s trousers, Mondrian-patterned mini-dresses (with strategic squares cut out) all announce Dress Camp’s signature, bold look, reminiscent of late-80s Versace or mid-80s Lacroix. Although the prints scream, the tailoring, like Versace and Lacroix, fits snugly and precisely. Despite the bold patterns and disco-gangsta flavor, the cut is not vulgar, but meticulously executed and, yes, perhaps elegant after all.

Headless mannequins float above the floor, suspended from the double-height ceiling in this industrial loft-like space. Like a posse of architects, the mannequins wear severe Japanese and European designs from the likes of Ann Demeulemeester and Collection Privee. The glow of 300 year-old chandeliers softens the hard blacks, browns and whites of the precisely constructed clothes, but not so much that the designs lose their super-sharp edge. This boutique doesn’t cater to trendy young girls who flow through Tokyo’s streets like bright fluttering butterflies; it’s for those who step from their chauffeured Benzes into gleaming office towers, anonymous but powerful.

In the 80s and 90s, the trendiest dressers garbed themselves in head to toe Armani, Versace or Prada. These days, the single-designer matchy-matchy look is about as popular in Tokyo as Betamax. Tokyoites now mix (and match) high and low with individualistic flair. Addition Adelaide knows that its sophisticated shoppers cull pieces from different collections and put together their own outfits. So it offers superbly tailored pieces, not outfits, by designers not readily available elsewhere—Miguel Adrover, Raf Simons and Jens Laugesen. Addition Adelaide displays its goods simply—on flat slabs in a minimalist setting—letting your imagination accessorize with flair.

While teens love Harajuku and fashionistas love Daikanyama, urban professionals looking to fill their wardrobes with precisely cut black suits, money no object, beeline to Aoyama and Omotesando. Here, the immaculate streets look like they’re steam-cleaned nightly and every shopper looks American Express Black-card wealthy. Lithe men and women with razor cut, highlighted hair stride confidently past the security guard at the doors of the Prada store, a polygram sheathed with puffy, quilted glass. Next they hit Jil Sander, Gucci, Michael Kors and Costume National. For those with bolder tastes, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo’s flagships stand across the street from each other in Aoyama. Each offer their version of modern couture, from Miyake’s sculptural crinkle-pleated separates to Kawakubo’s architecturally constructed suits with jagged cutouts and extra-long sleeves. Neither designer’s clothes conform to traditional ideas of human form. Close by, Hanae Mori, the grande dame of Japanese design, offers slightly easier to wear clothes, traditional, elegant and patrician—so much so that Mori is a favorite of the Japanese royal family. For jet-setters in society’s upper strata, Aoyama and Omotesando beckon.

Tokyo Shopping Guide

In Tokyo, the future is now. Glass-skinned towers pierce the sky and city-dwellers head indoors to giant biosphere-like domes to surf and ski. Architecture, whether framed in stainless steel or pine, seemingly defies gravity here, bulging out like popcorn or narrowing to pencil slimness. Digital billboards pour out a constant stream of advertising, bullet trains glide in and out of Tokyo Station, and you can buy every accoutrement of life from a vending machine, without ever exchanging a word with a human life form.

Yet alongside the impersonal and vast modernity that engulfs 12 million lives and 23 residential wards, Tokyo also has touches of the ancient medieval town it once was. Only a couple stops away from the neon lights of Shibuya and Ginza, less frantic neighborhoods await, brimming with artisanal goodies. For those willing to spend the time to explore, behind every blaring commercial strip, narrow streets wind crookedly, with small quiet shops tucked between homes, harkening back to a slower-paced life. A forest of high-rises often shades peaceful temple grounds. An overpass might shelter a café. Somewhere in the city’s hidden nooks and crannies, you might find a shop specializing in hand-finished denim or Brazilian bikinis or gold-leaf lacquerware—merchandise and shops where the human touch still lingers.

Tokyo never ceases to amaze and surprise, whether with the tiniest digital recording device to soaring architecture to Murakami’s amusing, anime-infused Vuitton bags, it offers some of the world’s best designs and man-made wonders. At some point, every visitor and resident alike lose themselves hopelessly in the tangle of streets which often bear no signs and no logical pattern. When it happens to you, if you can, luxuriate in the adventure of it. You may find a treasure—a secret garden, a temple, a shop, a friendly face—that shows you the true heart of this 21st century metropolis. Contributors: Research Editor, Sumiko Kokobu, Editorial Director, Julia Lee

Aoyama/Omotesando

While teens love Harajuku and fashionistas love Daikanyama, urban professionals looking to fill their wardrobes with precisely cut black suits, money no object, beeline to Aoyama and Omotesando.
>Go to Aoyama

Daikanyama

Tourists flock to the big-name glitz of the Ginza strip and the teenage circus of Harajuku. Locals head to the quieter streets of Daikanyama. A low-rise neighborhood chock-full of quirky boutiques and sidewalk cafes, Daikanyama often encloses leafy hidden courtyards within its clusters of shops and homes. But low-rise doesn’t mean low end.
>Go to Daikanyama

Harajuku

A lot of train stations in Tokyo look like strip malls—utilitarian blocks crammed with dry cleaners, pharmacists and convenience stores. Not Harajuku. From when you exit the Swiss chalet-style Harajuku train station which looks like a giant cuckoo clock, you’ll know you’re in for a surreal treat in this neck of the woods.
>Go to Harajuku

As we make the countdown to Valentine’s Day I am inspired by the NYC restaurant, Sweetiepie. If you haven’t heard, Sweetiepie is the charming West Village eaterie created by of Julie Janklow.

As a child I was and still am inspired by fabulous spaces. This is the restaurant of my dreams! I am a fan of pretty, magical, extravagant spaces. Julie who also designed the space was inspired by classic eateries such as Rumpelmeyer’s, Schwab’s Drug Store and the Fountain Coffee Shop at the Beverly Hills Hotel. This whimsical West Village eaterie is frequented by Agyness Deyn, Alexa Chung, and Gwyneth Paltrow. This is not simply an ice cream and dessert shop, Sweetiepie serves Mac & Cheese, sliders, dollar pancakes, and an elegant caviar service. Cocktails are served at the bar and desserts are a specialty, with bite-sized micro cakes, overflowing fruit fooles, and the Sweetiepig, a giant ice cream sundae made for sharing! Yum.

If this Sweetiepie were to inspire an outfit…it must include these Lanvin patent mirrored heeled sandals!
