Magnificent Style of the Maharaja

maharja

Inspired by the current V&A exhibition, “Maharaja” The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. I have always been enamored by Indian traditional dress with all of its intricate embroidery, lush textiles and expert craftsmanship. I own about five pairs of Indian sandals purchased at various Indian shops in California and New York as well as a couple pair brought back from Delhi by a friend. They are my summer go-to staple for summer dressing. I am so excited about this exhibit at, might I add my favorite museum in London. I am always drawn to the decorative arts museums and the V&A continually features fashion related exhibits. At this exhibit you’ll find all of the splendour and opulence of turbaned jeweled rulers of India’s royal courts. Now thru January 17, 2009.

If you have been fascinated by sari dressing you may be interested in this workshop at the V&A. A great bit of inspiration for creating your own Indian style!

“Indian Style: Dressing Without Seams”
Make a garment fit for a maharaja or maharani, by learning the art of wrapping a piece of cloth around the body. Fashion designer Julianna Sissons will show you how to create designs cut from a single piece of cloth, perhaps a seam-free top or a slinky skirt. See what you can do with just a pair of scissors! It will be held on Monday 30 November & Tuesday 1 December, Art Studio, Sackler Centre. Time 10.30-4pm.
